Director’s Message

The 2014 outbreak of Ebola has created worldwide concern as officials work to contain the spread of this deadly virus. In an attempt to detect persons experiencing a fever, infrared equipment has been widely used as a means of non-contact body temperature measurement.

While I am enthused by widespread use of infrared thermometry, obtaining accurate data requires an understanding that transcends instrument operation alone. Several recent news articles have shown industrial-grade point radiometers being used to measure human body temperature. With an uncertainty of ±2°C (3.6°F), such instruments are incapable of reliably measuring human body temperature.
As world health officials work to develop policies and protocols to combat Ebola, it is imperative that any screening measures deployed be reliable and accurate. The inappropriate use of infrared equipment will serve no scientific purpose and may actually allow feverish persons to go undetected.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by Ebola and we thank those who are on the front lines in the fight against its spread.
