Short Course 2

Temperature Limits for
Electrical and Mechanical Equipment

Description

Temperature has long been used to assess the condition of operating electrical and mechanical systems.  Elevated operating temperatures are often caused by component defects or improper operation of the subject system.  Regardless of cause, excess operating temperature can significantly shorten the life of installed equipment and lead to premature failure.  This course will discuss temperature limits for electrical and mechanical equipment along with several time-tested methods for setting operational temperature limits.

Learning outcomes

This course will enable you to:

  • recognize the effects of elevated temperatures on electrical and mechanical components
  • identify temperature limit criteria published by recognized standards organizations
  • utilize temperature to gauge the condition of operating electro/mechanical components
  • determine temperature limits according to accepted practices and standards
  • set repair priorities based upon operating temperature

Intended audience

This material is intended for anyone wishing to understand and set operational temperature limits for electrical and mechanical equipment.  Course is designed for beginners and experienced thermographers as well as maintenance personnel, engineers, and facility managers.

Instructor

R. James Seffrin is a Level III Certified Infrared Thermographer® and Director of Infraspection Institute located in Burlington, NJ.  Mr. Seffrin has over 25 years experience in performing infrared inspections for a wide variety of commercial, industrial and residential applications. He is a co-author of several industry standards and is qualified as an expert witness on the subject of thermography.
